School has returned and all students and staff have settled very well. We have had a very good start to the year. I thank the staff, families and students for making this happen.
This year we are excited to welcome many new students to the school across Prep to Year 12, especially our 30 Prep students. We now have 470 students at St Joseph’s School, a significant increase in enrolments over recent years and the largest the school has since we opened 1875.
This growth brings significant advantages to the school. Further, I am confident we have the staff, resources and systems in place to continue the success of the school and, very importantly, maintaining our culture and high quality learning.
My key message to all St Joseph’s School students continues to be:
“Be the best you can be.”
That means, focus on your learning, and live out our Mercy values so that all around you can be successful. I ask that families promote these expectations with their children.
My thanks also to the Parents and Friends Association for their efforts staffing the Can Bar at the Stanthorpe Show. The P&F and school have a strong affiliation with the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society and have run the Can Bar for many years now. Funds raised by the P&F very importantly support projects and activities for the betterment of our students. We look forward to the P & F Welcome BBQ for all families on Friday afternoon.
On Thursday 9 February, St Joseph’s School Foundation Day, we hold our beginning of year Foundation Day Mass and Student Leader Commissioning. Student leadership at St Joseph’s School is based on servant leadership, with Jesus as the role model for leadership and service in our community. All our Year 12s are committed to providing quality servant leadership for all students. That leadership was on display when three of our leaders, Taylah Organ, Belinda McIntyre and Eliza Telfer did a fine job of presenting a vote of thanks at the Stanthorpe Show on Friday.
I congratulate our appointed Student Leaders for 2023 and the Year 12 group as a whole.

God Bless
It was wonderful to welcome back all students across our school community and there was definitely a sense of energy and positivity across the campuses, with the influx of a large number of new students adding to the excitement. I take this opportunity to welcome all new members of our St Joseph’s community and to our existing families, it is great to see you all back. I also thank our Year 12 student leaders for arriving early to welcome students and families to the 2023 school year.
On Secondary, I addressed students in relation to the year ahead and the expectations we have as a school community. Firstly, I spoke of the importance of learning and creating a learning environment that will enable all students to achieve success in their own academic journey. It is important that all students maximise the opportunities to learn in every classroom and focus on positive and collaborative engagement with the teachers and their peers.
Secondly, I spoke of the importance of positive and respectful relationships. The key message centred on ensuring that each student, as an individual, focuses on having a positive influence with every interaction they have, whether it is a staff member, another student or a member of our wider community. We have very high expectations around learning and relationships at Joey’s, and we will continue to reinforce these with all students across the year.
On Monday Week 2, Mary Roberts and I travelled to Toowoomba with the 22 students involved in the Hybrid Learning subjects, where they worked collaboratively with students from OLSCC Dalby and St Saviour’s Toowoomba in commencing the academic year in Modern History, Legal Studies and Specialist Mathematics. I thank Mary Roberts for her leadership in delivering the Modern History Hybrid model, as well as Tyron Fraser (Dalby) and Joel Speranza (TCS) for their work in supporting the hybrid model for our students in Legal and Specialist Mathematics respectively. Further to this, Joseph Shorter will also be welcoming OLSCC Dalby students in his Year 11 Literature class, supporting their learning through a similar hybrid concept. This collective efficacy amongst our three schools highlights the focus we all have on providing quality learning experiences for all our students across a range of specialised subjects.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Call to be… Christ-like

Matthew Brown
Deputy Principal
ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL PRIMARY
It was wonderful to welcome all our students back to school last week for the start of the academic year 2023. After a week of planning, preparation and meetings on the part of teachers and school officers, it was lovely to hear the cacophony of noise on the first morning as the campus came back to life with greetings, laughter and stories of the holidays.
This year, we have 23 students who have joined St Joseph's in the primary classes, along with another 30 in Prep, and they were all introduced during our first assembly last Wednesday. Starting a new school - or indeed starting school for the first time - can cause some anxious moments but thanks to the warm welcome extended by the teachers and the existing students, nerves have not been too evident.
Additionally, we have welcomed two new school officers to our team this year. Amy Veitch has moved from the Gold Coast to be with us and will be working in Year 4 and Year 5 as well as some secondary classes. Georgie Cannon has relocated to Stanthorpe from Allora and is mainly working in the early years' classrooms. The ladies have already shown what great assets they are to the team on the Primary Campus.
2023 will see continuing to focus on developing the skills the children need to be great learners today, tomorrow and the future. Already there has been conversation in classrooms about the learning dispositions and their role in helping us each day. I have also heard children talking about the learning pit and the need to challenge themselves. I encourage parents to emphasis this focus by asking their children, 'what did you learn today?' rather than 'what did you do today?'. The learnings could be academic or social, big or small - but they all deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.
As we move through this school year, I very much encourage parents and caregivers to play an active role in the life of our school in whatever way you can. It is through working together that so much can be achieved and we look forward to your ongoing support. Please feel free to contact us at any time should the need arise - or even just to say hello!
With God's blessings for a wonderful 2023.

ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL FORMATION & IDENTITY
A New Beginning…
As we commence a new school year, I would like to extend a warm welcome to both our new and returning families. Thank you for choosing St Joseph’s School for your child’s education. As a Catholic school, St Joseph’s aims to create a supportive, faith filled environment where students are nurtured and inspired to reach their full potential and be the best they can be.
As Assistant Principal Formation and Identity, my role encompasses:
- Supporting members of the school community in their faith journey
- Development and review of Mission, policies and procedures
- Development of the classroom and RE curriculum, including staff formation and resourcing
- Preparing and facilitating prayer and liturgical experiences, including retreats and service-learning opportunities
- Teaching
This is my 10th year as APFI and I continue to find the role inspiring, challenging and rewarding in all aspects.
Commencing at a Catholic school can be overwhelming and perhaps daunting for families not familiar with the Catholic tradition or Catholic schooling. To allay any uncertainties families may be feeling, an excellent book will be available in coming weeks from our school library. “‘So You’re Sending Your Child to a Catholic School’ is a friendly and gentle introduction to a few of the beliefs and values which make Catholics tick. It is a modest overview for people coming in touch with the Church, perhaps for the first time, or refreshing their acquaintance” (Garratt Publishing, 2023).
Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead.
With God's blessings,
Megan Mahoney
Assistant to the Principal Formation & Identity

Two modules that are of particularly relevant for this time of year are School Transitions (starting school, a new year or at a new school) and Surviving Final Year (Year 12).
Whether it is starting school for the first time, moving up to a higher grade or embarking on a journey through secondary school, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means that the children are growing up!
Every year, the media exposes us to the hype and pressure relating to the final year of secondary school. However, putting things into perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it will not be the most important year of your child’s life. It is crucial for parents to reinforce the mantra of ‘you are more than your ATAR’.
We suggest you explore what SchoolTV has to offer.
If you have any concerns about your child, please contact your child’s teacher, one of the Wellbeing Team or a member of the School Leadership Team.
ST JOSEPH'S SCHOOL FOUNDATION DAY MASS & LEADER INDUCTION
The foundation stone for the Convent building now on the Secondary campus was laid on 11 October 1931. The building cost the grand sum of 12,258 pounds and solemnly blessed and opened by his Lordship Dr J Byrne, Bishop of Towoomba on the 17th of April 1932.
The original school was formerly the Globe Hotel. The school occupied the position more or less where the current Presbytery now stands. It was thought that its initial roll call was in the excess of 120 students, some of whom travelled considerable distances by foot from th the outlying tin mines. The original 'school' consisted of one large room with the barest of necessities.

Change of details
If you have recently changed address, phone number or any other details have changed, please make these changes by using the Sentral for Parents app or advise the school office so we can ensure our records are up to date and we can update any systems that may be impacted.
Primary carpark
Parents are reminded that the carpark at the Primary office is strictly for teachers and staff only during school hours. Please do not use the car park to collect your children.
Volunteers
We always welcome volunteers in our library, tuckshop or at out-of-class activities. If you would like to become a volunteer please undertake the Student Protection and Code of Conduct for 2023. Once completed, you will be required to print and return the Volunteer Declaration form to the School office or email it to stanthorpe@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please note that Parents/Caregivers cannot volunteer in any capacity without completing the Declaration.
Uniform
We believe a clean, neat, uniformed appearance reflects a pride in the individual as well as reflecting well upon his/her family and school. The expectation is that all students are wearing the correct uniform and groomed as per the policy every day.
Please also ensure you print your child’s name on their school uniforms with a permanent marker. There is a lost property box located in in the Multipurpose room at Primary and in the staffroom at Secondary – lost or unnamed articles are placed here to await collection. We encourage parents to check these boxes regularly for lost clothing.
Congratulations to Year 8 student Thomas Petrie for receiving the Southern Downs Regional Council Junior Sportsperson of the Year (Southern Region) Award on Australia Day.
An award very well deserved !
To our Parish Priest, Father Gonzo, who is now a "fair dinkem Aussie".
Fr Gonzo was sworn in as an Australian Citizen during the Australia Day procedings.
Fr Gonzo also spent time with the Year 5 students talking to them about his experience of becoming an Australian Citizen.
This award recognises Andrew’s service to the community through a range of organisations including leadership roles in the Australian Bravery Association and Australian Bravery Foundation, as well as Australian Futsal and the Independent Schools Soccer Association as a coach and administrator.
Andrew’s substantial community contribution through educational leadership has also been recognised in the Award, in his current role at St Joseph’s and the multiple leadership roles undertaken at St Laurence’s College, Brisbane.
Thankyou to the P & F Association for purchasing the Prep hats for 2023 Prep students.
All Prep students were presented with their hats on Wednesday 1st February by P & F President and local Sergeant Dan O'Dea.

YEAR 6 STUDENTS SHOW OFF THEIR NEW SHIRTS
Congratulations to Aiden McCosker whose design was chosen by the 2022 Year 5 students to be their Year 6 shirt for this year.
Our Year 6 students were presented with their shirts last and they all look very smart dressed as our Primary leaders for 2023.

For the first time this year, the initial day for these students incorporated some time being spent exploring the theme of what it means to be an effective learner at St Joseph's, with those who were here in Year 6 helping to upskill the new students in the language and practices associated with Visible Learning. Some comments from the students at the end of the sessions included:
- Learning is not easy but if we make mistakes, we learn from that and try again.
- learning is not about being the best but about being the best version of you.
- Learning is not something that everyone is good at so we can help each other to improve in areas that are difficult. This will be different for everyone.
- Learning is challenging so I want to work hard because this is what I am here for.
- Learning can be long and hard but keep on pushing.
- If you put your mind to it, you can always improve.
- Learning is key so it can guide more options for love or work or anything else.
- Learning is hard so I try to push myself more.
- Learning can be hard so we need to be a jungle tiger not a zoo tiger because if I am a jungle tiger I will be more effective.
- Your brain is a muscle that can be trained to help you be smarter.
- You have to be organised and set yourself up for success.
- Learning is not something you can do instantly. It takes time, patience and hard work.
- You are in charge of your learning and it's your choice to grow or to stay and say "that's good enough".
- Learning is challenging so I need to use resilience and persistence while working.
This work will be ongoing with this cohort and all students from P - 12 during the coming year.

As part of their Ancient Australian History unit, students were working collaboratively to create a timeline of key events, draw parallels and make conclusions about the impact of colonisation on First Nation Australians.

Our Year 2 students have been busy making and using their prayer beads.
Students really enjoyed this activity, keeping their beads in their desks so they can grab them out and use them whenever they need to.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE RECOGNITION
Well done to Year 12 student David Nemeth, for his role as guard commander of the catafalque party at last years Remembrance Day Service. David's role was recently recognised in the Queensland RSL News magazine.
A catafalque party consists of four members of an armed guard who stand, their heads bowed and their arms (weapon) reversed, facing outward approximately one metre from the coffin or catafalque as a symbolic form of respect for those who have fallen.
Catafalque parties are mounted around coffins as a sign of respect and around memorials on occasions of remembrance such as Anzac Day and Rememberane Day.
We thank David and his family for their ongoing service as a member of the TS Kookaburra Navy Cadets.
Congratulations David !

An excellent effort by our School Leaders, Captain Taylah Organ and Vice-Captains Belinda McIntrye and Eliza Telfer, who gave the vote of thanks at the official opening of the Stanthorpe Showon Friday 3th February 2023.
Our leaders are to comended and did wonderfully well, sharing stories about their memories of the Show and why it is important to our community.
Congratulations also to our Secondary students who placed second in the Fruit Wall Display Competition. Thanks to teachers Allan Lahey and Courtenay Mason for their work with the students on the display.

It was also so wonderful to see all of the St Joey's talent on display all around the Show.

Well done to all students and teachers !
School photos will be taken on Monday 20th February at the Bathersby Centre.
Each student has been issued an envelope printed uniquely with their name and year level. Students who have enrolled in the last few weeks may need to use a blank envelope as they were printed prior to their enrolment.
The order envelope has a wide choice of photo packs that you can purchase. It is preferable to pay either with credit card or via online ordering as this ensures a record of your order. Please avoid paying with cash.
The envelopes must be returned to the School Office prior to the photo day, even if not buying photos.
Family envelopes will be available from the School Office and need to be returned prior to the photo day.
Please contact Mrs Angelina Sims on 46815 904 for any further enquiries.

Secondary Swimming Carnival
Thursday 2 February saw the 2023 sporting calendar get underway with the running of the annual school swimming carnival. A beautiful summer day greeted us all, helping to see record numbers enter the pool to compete.
In amongst the competitiveness from a large number of students the chaotic fun of the mentor class raft race once again proved a hit amongst students and teachers.
In a turn of events the teachers for the first time in many years were defeated by the students in the staff v students relay. No doubt some reflection will take place over the next 12 months and a more committed training program adhered to by the teachers to reclaim the sardine shield in 2024.
After a number of years in 2nd position McAuley rose from the ashes to claim the champion house trophy. Not to be outdone though, Davadi’s enthusiastic attitude throughout the day saw them awarded the spirit trophy.
I’d like to personally congratulate all students and the house captains in particular for their efforts in making the day a success, the teaching staff for allowing the day to run so smoothly and finally to Gail and Michael Smail at the Stanthorpe Swimming Pool for providing a first class facility for our school.
