My thanks to all students, staff and families for a good start to the year. I am very pleased with the school’s progress so far.
This year we are focusing on improving student engagement in their learning and school generally.
As we progress into another busy year, it is very important that all students do their best to succeed in their learning and living out our Mercy Values. That includes attending regularly, completion of assessment, focused learning in the classroom, positive behaviour and relationships around the school, and participation in all activities.
Parent engagement in a child’s learning is essential to improved outcomes for students of all ages. Genuine parent engagement exists when there is a meaningful relationship between parents and teachers with the shared goal of maximising learning outcomes for students. I encourage all parents and carers to have a genuine connection with their child’s learning and work with the school to achieve success.
One aspect of particular importance that parents and carers can greatly influence is regular attendance at school. I appreciate that many factors influence a student's ability to attend regularly, many which are out of their control, for example, illness. However, some students take the option of not attending on occasions, or for some students, many occasions.
Attendance really does matter.
Legal responsibilities about attendance
Children who are of compulsory school age are legally required to attend school every school day unless there is an acceptable excuse. A child continues to be of compulsory school age until they have completed Year 10 or turned sixteen, whichever comes first.
After the compulsory school age ends, the compulsory participation phase begins. The same legal requirements apply. A young person’s compulsory participation phase continues from the end of the compulsory schooling stage, until they turn 17 years of age, or until they gain a Qld Certificate of Education (QCE), a Certificate of Achievement, Senior Statement, Certificate III or Certificate IV.
When is it not okay to miss school?
From time-to-time absences from school may be necessary - for example sickness, accidents, or family emergencies. Parents/carers should let the school know the reason for the absence as soon as possible, either before or on the day of absence.
It is not okay to miss school to sleep in, finish assignments, go on holidays or shop. It is a legal requirement to attend school and missed lessons will set a student back in their learning.
Please work with your children and the school to ensure full attendance of your children. Contact the school about any concerns or queries you have. We are here to support your children.
I wish all students and families a successful year. Please do hesitate to contact me if there is a matter you wish to discuss or you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing or learning.
God Bless
It was wonderful to welcome back all students across our school community and there was definitely a sense of energy and positivity across the campuses, with the influx of a large number of new students adding to the excitement.
I take this opportunity to welcome all new members of our St Joseph’s community and to our existing families, it is great to see you all back. I also thank our Year 12 student leaders for arriving early to welcome students and families to the 2024 school year.
On Secondary, I addressed students in relation to the year ahead and the expectations we have as a school community. Firstly, I spoke of the importance of learning and creating a learning environment that will enable all students to achieve success in their own academic journey. It is important that all students maximise the opportunities to learn in every classroom and focus on positive and collaborative engagement with the teachers and their peers.
Secondly, I spoke of the importance of positive and respectful relationships. The key message centred on ensuring that each student, as an individual, focuses on having a positive influence with every interaction they have, whether it is a staff member, another student or a member of our wider community. We have very high expectations around learning and relationships at Joey’s, and we will continue to reinforce these with all students across the year.
Our Year 7 students took part in a two-day transition program at the start of the year. This was an interactive program that focused on building relationships and what it means to be a learner at St Joseph’s, as well as familiarising them with our online learning platforms and using technology to enhance their learning. For the next few weeks, Year 7 students will be in morning mentor classes with Anna Jones and myself to continue to support this transition into secondary, before moving to their mentor groups from Week 5.
On Wednesday Week 2, Mary Roberts and I travelled to Toowoomba with the students involved in the Hybrid Learning subjects, where they worked collaboratively with students from OLSCC Dalby and St Saviour’s Toowoomba in commencing the academic year in Modern History, Aerospace, Legal Studies and Specialist Mathematics. I thank Mary Roberts for her leadership in delivering the Modern History Hybrid model, as well as Tyron Fraser (Dalby), Marty Hollis (St Mary’s College) and Joel Speranza (TCS) for their work in supporting the hybrid model for our students in Legal, Aerospace and Specialist Mathematics respectively.
Further to this, Joseph Shorter will also have OLSCC Dalby students continuing in his Year 12 Literature class, supporting their learning through a similar hybrid concept. This collective efficacy amongst our three schools highlights the focus we all have on providing quality learning experiences for all our students across a range of specialised subjects.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Call to be… Christ-Like

Matthew Brown
Deputy Principal
ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL FORMATION & IDENTITY
Welcome to the New School Year.
“The start of something new brings the hope of something great”.
Welcome to all new and returning families to the 2024 school year. As a Catholic school steeped in the Mercy tradition our aim is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to come to know Jesus, nurturing and enriching their religious and spiritual development through prayer, celebrations, social justice activities and formation opportunities.
Religious education and the religious life of the school are an integral component to the formation of the whole person. As such the learning and experiences undertaken by our students centre on a continual dialogue between the Catholic tradition, their life experiences and cultural contexts. The growth of everyone, wherever they may be on their spiritual journey, is central to the mission of St Joseph’s School.
We look forward to continuing the journey in 2024.
Megan Mahoney
Assistant to the Principal Formation & Identity
ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL PRIMARY & TEACHING & LEARNING
Welcome back to the new school year. I hope that all our families enjoyed a relaxing holiday and that the children have returned to school with an eagerness to get started on the 2024 learning journey. An especially warm welcome is extended to all our new families and the many students who have walked through the gates of St Joseph’s School for the first time. I trust that for all our families, your association with our school will be a long and prosperous one.As a school, we are looking forward to another successful year, building on the achievements of last year.
For those involved in the school community, each day will present opportunities as well as challenges and the manner in which both are received and embraced will ultimately determine the level of satisfaction and success each one of us gains from this year. A positive and resilient attitude is key, as is a willingness to co-operate with, and look out for others. This is the message that has been shared with the children from the start of the term and this will be continued throughout the year.
Returning to school following a long break is not always easy and for some children there can be a level of anxiety as they adjust to school routines again and miss spending time with their family members during the day. We understand this and will support the children and their families in this transition period. Please let us know if your child/ren are having particular difficulties.
The last two weeks have been marked by some significant events. The Prep cohort of 2024 have received their yellow hats, courtesy of the P&F and have also rang the school bell to symbolise the start of their educational journey. Also, the Year 6 students have been presented with 'Leader' shirts. In all the classrooms, learning has commenced with enthusiasm with all classes exploring what it means to be an effective learner at St Joseph's.
With God's blessings

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION REMINDERS
Early departure & late arrival slips
A friendly reminder regarding correct procedures for late arrivals, early departures and visitors as follows:
- All late students MUST report to the School Office prior to proceeding to class.
- For early departures, the usual parental permission is required, however, the students sign out at the School Office kiosk. Returning students MUST present this printed slip to the office before heading back to class. Should the student not return to the office with the slip prior to returning to class, they will be marked as absent for the remainder of the day. All students in Prep to Year 11 leaving early, must be collected by a parent / caregiver. Parents are asked to wait at the office - we will have the child come to the office.
- All contractors, parents and visitors must sign in and out at the School Office kiosk if they are visiting classrooms or coming into other parts of the school. This does not apply to parents dropping students off before school and collecting them after school.
- Call ahead to the office if you wish to make an appointment with the Principal, Principal's Assistant or the Bursar.
If your child is absent from school, please advise the school office by :
- using the Sentral for Parents app
- calling the office on 07 4681 5900 and leaving a message. Please clearly state your child's name and their class.
- emailing stanthorpe@twb.catholic.edu.au
Please do not ask your other children to advise the office as often these messages are not passed on. If no advice is received, an SMS will be sent seeking confirmation, followed by a phone call if required.
Change of details
If you have recently changed address, phone number or any other details have changed, please make these changes by using the Sentral for Parents app or advise the school office so we can ensure our records are up to date and we can update any systems that may be impacted.
Primary carpark
Parents are reminded that the carpark at the Primary office is strictly for teachers and staff only during school hours. Please do not use the car park to collect your children.
Volunteers
We always welcome volunteers in our library, tuckshop or at out-of-class activities. If you would like to become a volunteer please undertake the Student Protection and Code of Conduct for 2024.
If you wish to volunteer at St Joseph's School this year, you must complete the Student Protection and Code of Conduct for 2024. The link is provided:
Volunteers and Visiting Service Providers
Once completed, you will be required to print and return the Volunteer Declaration form to the School office or email it to stanthorpe@twb.catholic.edu.au. Please note that Parents/Caregivers cannot volunteer in any capacity without completing the Declaration.
Uniform
We believe a clean, neat, uniformed appearance reflects a pride in the individual as well as reflecting well upon his/her family and school. The expectation is that all students are wearing the correct uniform and groomed as per the policy every day.
Please also ensure you print your child’s name on their school uniforms with a permanent marker. There is a lost property box located in in the Multipurpose room at Primary and in the staffroom at Secondary – lost or unnamed articles are placed here to await collection. We encourage parents to check these boxes regularly for lost clothing.
Your assistance and understanding of the above procedures is greatly appreciated.

IMPORTANT - APPLE & GRAPE FESTIVAL ARCHES
Kindly be aware that the installation of arches for the Apple & Grape Festival is scheduled for Sunday, February 4th.
When organizing your Sunday activities, consider the potential impact on your journey to Church and the use of the Church carpark due to transit disruptions on the main street. Additionally, please note that the arches may limit parking availability in front of the Convent. Keep this in mind when dropping off and picking up your child from school.
A reminder to comply with the conditions of the St Paul’s church precinct :
- All cars for drop-offs and pick-ups are parked INSIDE the old tennis court area.
- A parent must accompany the child from the car to gate in the morning and the reverse in the afternoon.
- It has been noted that parents sit in the car using their mobile phones whilst waiting for students and are obviously not aware of children coming and going. It has been requested that no parent is to sit in the car and wait for their child to come to the car.
Please note that works will be occurring on the church grounds along with the childcare centre. Families and staff from the childcare centre will also be using the tennis court precinct for car parking. Whilst these works are occurring, it is even more integral that these workplace health and safety requests are adhered to.
We thank the St Paul’s Anglican Parish for enabling our families car parking and their ongoing support.
PREP HAT PRESENTATION & RINGING OF THE SCHOOL BELL
Thankyou to the P & F Association for purchasing the Prep hats for 2024 Prep students.
All Prep students were presented with their hats on Wednesday 24th Januayr by P & F President and local Sergeant Dan O'Dea.
It was also wonderful to start the new tradition of having Prep students ring the school bell at the beginning of their journey, creating a symbolic link with the Year 12 students who traditionally ring it at Graduation. This adds a special touch to the school's culture and fosters a sense of unity among students across all grades.
SOUTHERN DOWNS REGIONAL COUNCIL YOUTH COUNCIL
Congratulations to Year 10 students Eden Shatte and Lillian Kendall on their appointment as our representatives to the Southern Downs Regional Council Youth
Council.

YEAR 6 STUDENTS SHOW OFF THEIR NEW SHIRTS
Congratulations to Mia Howard, whose design was selected by the Year 5 students of 2023 as the winning design for their Year 6 shirt this year.
On Wednesday, January 24th, our Year 6 students received their shirts and will proudly wear them as they step into their roles as Primary leaders for the year 2024.
An exciting addition to your Year 7 Agriculture class! Chickens are wonderful animals to learn about in terms of their biology, behavior, and how they contribute to sustainable agriculture. Working with them can teach students responsibility, empathy, and the basics of animal care.
THE LEARNING PIT WITH YEAR 3/4F
Students in Year 3/4F have been spending the first few weeks at school learning in the Learning Pit.
The Learning Pit is an analogy to help students look at their learning as an opportunity for them to keep growing. The Learning Pit analogy helps students understand that they can take control over their own learning, even when it is hard and challenging. The learning pit metaphor is a great way to introduce the concept of growth through challenges to children.
NEWS FROM OUR YEAR 9 and 10 BUSINESS CLASS
Year 9 and 10 Business students have kicked the year off by engaging in their first unit – entrepreneurship!
St Joseph’s are very proud to be partnering with Future Anything to deliver their Activate program in Semester 1. The semester will culminate in a ‘pitchfest’, open to parents and community members next term, so watch this space!!
A big thanks to our major sponsor, Proterra Group for supporting this incredible program at Joey’s.

What could be more delightful than observing four generations engaging in the St Joseph's School Stanthorpe experience?
This photo precisely captures that sentiment.
Lucy Dowie, a new Prep student, embarked on her educational journey on Wednesday, January 24th, under the watchful eyes of her mother, Brooke Dowie, grandmother Andrea Shatte, and great-grandmother Lyn Cosmo — all of whom are proud alumni of St Joseph's School Stanthorpe.
EXCITING NEWS FROM OUR TUCKSHOP
This year tuckshop on both the Primary and Secondary campus will be will be run by a Parents & Friends Association sub-committee.
Ruth Stefanon, Fiona Fox, Emma Fraguas, Chelsea Vedelago, Sally Cameron and Rebecca Telfer will coordinate the tuckshop with the assistance of Megan Hines, the Bursar.
PRIMARY - Monday & Fridays
The new committee will be trialling a new class-based roster system this year. This roster covers both tuckshop workers as well as homebaking. It will mean that each class will only need to find enough volunteers to help in tuckshop for a few weeks for the entire year. The roster can be found below and has also been distributed via the Class Parent Facebook pages. It will be up to each class to find volunteers but the committee will also be ensuring the roster is sufficiently full for each shift.
SECONDARY - Wednesdays
For the Secondary campus it has been decided to keep the same system as previous years, asking for one or two parent helpers each shift. As the weeks progress, it is hoped to involve the senior students as well.
The committee have put the call out for helpers and thank those parents who have already voluntered, however there are still some vacant spots that need to be filled.

FREE WEBINAR - RESPONSIBLE USE OF DIGITAL SERVICES
Catholic School Parents Queensland warmly invite all Catholic School Parents and Carers, to join in on a live Webinar with Susan McLean from CyberSafety Solutions on Wednesday 7 February 7pm-8pm.
This informative webinar will look at the issue of ‘phone bans’ in schools and provide information to support the importance of this occurring. There is extensive evidence that students do not have the capacity to make good choices when phones are involved and during the school day, it becomes a ‘duty of care’ issue for schools. Support from home will be vital for the success of these rules. We will look at the how and why a parent can support their child’s school in relation to this and the reasons behind the restrictions.
The webinar will also cover more broadly, cybersafety, the risk and the reality of the online world, with time for questions at the end.
