A reflection on Catherine McAuley
In Catherine's day, the new rich were resented, resisted, and thought to be English sympathisers.
“Catherine saw potential for doing good.”
(Joanna Regan rsm. 1978. Tender Courage)

The Awards Night on Thursday last week was a special night. It is the highlight of the year, celebrating so many wonderful achievements by our students and the exceptional work by the staff to get them there. Thanks to Angelina Sims for her outstanding work putting the Awards Night together and to all staff who helped. My thanks also to School Leadership Team members Megan Mahoney, Sarah Yates and Matthew Brown for their many contributions, Dr James Cuskelly OAM for organising and performing with the Secondary choir and Prep-Year 2 coral group, and Mrs Maple Edgerton and the strings orchestra. The Year 12s also did a fine job as the presenters for the evening and I am exceptionally grateful to our many guests and the sponsors of the school. Well done to all award recipients and congratulations to their families.
I would also like to congratulate our 2024 Student Leaders who were appointed last week and I look forward to their, together with all the Year 12s, positive servant leadership of the student body next year.
Our student leaders for 2024 are:
SCHOOL CAPTAINS:
- Annaliese McCosker
- Brigid O'Dea
SCHOOL VICE-CAPTAINS:
- Rylee Vedelago
- Claire Williamson
DAVADI HOUSE CAPTAINS:
- Patrick Brown
- Claire Williamson
McAULEY HOUSE CAPTAINS:
- Kataya McNamara
- Ryan Whiticker
PREFECTS:
- Olivia Page
- Luke Webb
- Siena Zanatta
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work of Mrs Gianna Zanatta-Blaxland and Ms Tracey Cullinan for the organisation of the Colour Run last Friday. It was a fun day by all. Moneys raised will go towards school projects including a green space on the Primary and a new Primary cubby house.
God Bless

Welcome back to Term 4! It is important that all students continue to engage in their learning and maximise the opportunities to consolidate and improve the knowledge, skills and capabilities that have been developed across the year.
The Year 12 students have been immersed in preparations for the External Assessment block, which commenced on 23 October across Queensland. Following a challenging Mock External Assessment block at the end of last term, coupled with the excellent Toowoomba Catholic Schools External Assessment Preparation program run across the September holidays, the students have been provided with extensive feedback in relation to their knowledge, skills and capabilities around the external examinations. The Year 12 students, with feelings of apprehension, coupled with positive energy, have performed remarkably well in the exams so far. The journey in preparing for these external exams has been long and challenging, and we as a school community are proud of the effort and commitment that the Year 12’s have shown across the exam block. We wish them continued luck!
Awards night for Primary and Secondary students were a wonderful celebration of the achievements of our students in all aspects of their schooling. It was pleasing to see so many of our students receive recognition not only for academic success, but for sporting, cultural, religious and leadership success also. As a school community, we congratulate all these students on their excellent efforts across the year. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the new student leaders for 2024, in particular the students who have received opportunities to represent the student body as captains, vice captains, prefects and house captains. It is certainly an honour for these students, and I am confident they, along with the senior cohort as a collective group, will lead the school positively in 2024.
On November 6, the Year 6 students transitioning into Year 7 in 2024, including students joining our community from other schools in the region, will enjoy as full day program on the secondary campus. Details for this day have been sent to parents and we look forward to a fun-filled and engaging day of activities. As a school, we are excited to see the continued growth of the Year 6 students as a collective group as they move into secondary together, building on the wonderful work done this year in developing their skills, capabilities and leadership qualities as part of the Year 6 hub.
Call to be… Christ-Like
Called to live… Mercy

ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL PRIMARY & TEACHING & LEARNING

This final term of the academic year has started with earnest and there have already been many highlights.
The author visit and workshops by Dr Cameron Stelzer were well received by the students, as was the Bonsai experience. It is wonderful that we are able to enhance the curriculum for our learners with such opportunities and I thank Nardia Stanford and Raylene Kendall for their organisation of these events.
The Colour Run last week provided much entertainment and it was fitting that the Year 12 students choose to bring their school days to a close surrounded by students from Prep - Year 11. Thanks are extended to Tracey Cullinan and Gianna Blaxland-Zanatta for their preparation of the event and to all the students who fundraised for the school. The same day also saw some students attend a chess competition in Warwick where they represented the school well. Thanks to Anna Jones for accompanying them.
Some of our students have also participated in the Maths Team Challenge at Stanthorpe State High School where one of our teams took out first place. Congratulations to all who took part and represented our school admirably.
Last week we recognised the efforts and achievements of many of our students at Awards Night. As always, this was a wonderful night of celebration for students, parents and teachers. Of course, not all students can receive awards but we should pause to acknowledge the progress that so many of our learners have made this year - and will continue to make before the academic year comes to an end.
It would be easy to rest on our laurels as we enter the final part of the year, but evidence from around the classrooms suggests that the primary students are doing that. There is still a buzz of learning in each room and a sense of finishing the year on a high. Over coming weeks, the students will complete various assessments which we will use to determine the growth each of them have made over the year in Maths and Reading in particular. As a Visible Learning school, it is important that we are evaluating our impact and monitoring data is one way that we can do that.
Finally, this week we recognise all the teaching staff across the school on World Teachers’ Day and thank each of them sincerely for their dedication and commitment to the children in their care.
With God's blessings

A Trip to Remember…
Over the September holidays I had the opportunity to travel, together with other Principals, APREs, and TCS staff to the Holy Land. We began our journey in Jordan, floating in the Dead Sea, exploring the site of Jesus’ baptism, the Jordan River, and historical Petra.
Crossing over the border into Israel, we enjoyed a few days in Lake Tiberias, swimming in the Sea of Galilee where so many events took place during the lifetime of Jesus.
Bethlehem was a city where everything, from alcoholic beverages to eateries reflected the significance of the birth place of Jesus. I was able to visit the place where Jesus was born, together with other sites where a number of miracles are believed to have occurred, as well as significant sites where Jesus’ teachings took place.
Travelling through Old Jerusalem was amazing and inspiring. Visiting the Holy Sepulchre, one of the holiest sites for Christians in the world was mesmerising. And then to see the different quarters of the old city bustling with people and stalls, was an experience to remember.
I am extremely grateful that this opportunity presented itself to me and has certainly strengthened and changed my faith in ways too difficult to describe.
I was deeply saddened to see the conflict erupt recently and I hold all those involved and affected by this turmoil in my prayers.
“Lord, please free our world from conflict.
Bring unity to troubled nations.
and may Your peace reign in every heart. Amen”

Welcome to Mrs Jane Clarke who has recently joined our teaching staff here at St Joseph's. The growth in enrolments in Year 2 and Year 3 has provided us with an opportunity to improve the way in which we support the learning of all the students in these year levels throughout Term 4.
Mrs Clarke is a very experienced, qualified and capable teacher who has worked in a number of Catholic schools in Queensland and New South Wales. She has recently moved to Stanthorpe with her family and has two daughters at St Joseph’s School.
We are very fortunate to be able to offer this additional support to the students and teachers.

Secondary student, Hollie Daniels has recently commenced a traineeship here at St Joseph's following her work experience placement last term. Hollie has commenced a Certificate III in School Based Education Support school-based traineeship. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in supporting student learning in a primary school setting. Working on Fridays in a school-based traineeship allows Hollie to gain valuable hands-on experience while also earning a qualification.
This program will likely involve tasks such as assisting teachers in the classroom, providing support to students, and contributing to the overall educational environment. It's a wonderful way to learn about the education system and make a positive impact on young learners.
Students in Year 5 have been busy working on team building and social skills activities throughout the year.
One of the activities in which they have recently undertaken is the "human knot".

The results are in !
Congratulations and well done on our 2022 St Joseph's Riesling winning first place at the Ekka this year in the White Wines section. This wine was produced by our students here at St Joseph's.
The 2022 Reisling AND the 2023 Montepulciano each won a bronze medal at the Small Winemakers Show held last week here in Stanthorpe.
Both wines are available for purchase. Due to the small production run this year, there is a limit purchase of 6 bottles each of the Montepulciano. It is available from the Wine College. The price is $10/bottle. There are no limits on the 2022 Riesling, which can be purchased for $10/bottle Ballandean Estate.
Congratulations to all students involved.
Students from Year 11 and 12 recently travelled to the Snowy Mountains for the annual ski trip. The school ski trip offers lifelong memories and fun for school students and teaches them valuable life lessons. We are talking real world experience that will inspire and help school students become more worldly individuals and critical thinkers.
Travelling with their peers and pushing students out of their comfort zone helps to strengthen friendships and build confidence.
Lots of laughs and many memories were made - that's for sure !

DR CAMERON STEZLER- The Story Doctor
On Monday 9th October, we had a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron visited St Joseph’s School to run workshops with our P-6 students.
Prep and Year 1 students enjoyed an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. Cameron then engaged with the Year 2-3 students in a workshop exploring exciting and descriptive writing. Year 4-6 students then took a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, and applying their own creative components. Students and teachers had a great day!
In conjunction with the Author Visit, St Joseph’s School families had a special opportunity to purchase a signed and personalised copy of Cameron’s books.

Year 7 Humanities students are currently studying the democratic process, how our government works, the Australian Constitution and how citizens participate in government through voting and referendums.
On 12th October, Year 7 students had the opportunity to visit the Voting Centre in the Anglican Church Hall. The Officer in Charge gave students a tour of the facility, demonstrating the voting process from an organisational and voting perspective.
Students thoroughly enjoyed this enriching learning opportunity and would like to thank Debbie Wilmot and her staff for providing this opportunity. The AEC have kindly donated the empty polling booths so students can hold their own ‘referendum’ in the near future.

Year 12 students are getting ready to graduate, with only a number of weeks to go before they complete their Secondary education. For five St Joseph’s School students, they are also about to complete their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship!
To acknowledge and thank the host employers for providing our students with the opportunity to participate in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, an Employer Thank You Luncheon was held on Thursday 12th October at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism.
The host employers not only provided students with the opportunity to work as a paid employee and obtain a recognised qualification, but also supported the students through navigating ‘the world of work’.
The luncheon also recognised the Year 12 students who have worked diligently to complete their work hours and units of competency in order to obtain their qualification.
Congratulations to all our students and thank you to the employers.
LEARNING ABOUT THE ART OF BONSAI
In Week 2, students delved into the captivating world of Bonsai during a visit by expert Ms Kim Rochelle- Brown from Lilliannah Bonsai.
They explored various Bonsai styles, discovering the meticulous artistry required to nurture these miniature living treasures. It was an eye-opener that Bonsai trees, like cherished pets, require outdoor living, regular feeding, watering, and careful grooming.
The historical journey from China to Japan, with "Bonsai" translating to "potted tree" in English, offered a rich context for appreciation. Students also acquired Bonsai-related vocabulary, such as "hachi" (pot) and "nebari" (surface roots).
Beyond the technical aspects, our students explored the profound connection between Bonsai and Japanese culture and society. This unique experience expanded horizons, fostering curiosity and deepening appreciation for this ancient art form.
A big thankyou to Lilliannah Bonsai for this enlightening visit!

2023 YEARBOOK ORDERS ARE NOW OPEN
Yearbooks showcase St Joseph’s School student’s achievements, awards, activities, and adventures, as well as being a collection of memories. Included in the Yearbook are class photos from Prep to Year 12 and the highlights throughout the year, including reports from the Principal Andrew Kendall, the Leadership Team and the Student Leaders.
The 2023 Yearbooks are $35 per copy with only 100 Yearbooks being printed this year so you will need to act quickly to secure a copy. To confirm your Yearbook order, all payments are to be made through the Qkr! app. It can be found under "School Payments, School Magazine". The Yearbook will then need to be ordered under your child's name.
Yearbooks will be available for collection in Term 1 of 2024. A broadcast will be sent advising when the Yearbooks have arrived.
QLD SCHOOL IMMUNISATION PROGRAM
The Chief Health Officer (CHO) has written to inform Catholic school authorities of an important change regarding meningococcal vaccination free of charge to all eligible infants, children and adolescents in Queensland.
Commencing in the 2024 school year, the Queensland School Immunisation Program (SIP) will provide Year 10 students vaccination against meningococcal B (menB). The menB vaccine will be delivered in two does with a minimum of eight weeks between doses to ensure effective protection.
This change is in response to the emergence of menB as the most common cause of illness and death from meningococcal disease in Queensland. Previously funded menB vaccine was only available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and individuals with specific medical risk factors.
Questions about this change can be directed to your School Immunisation Program provider or the Queensland Health Immunisation Program at immunisation@health.qld.gov.au.
More information can be found at https://www.health.qld.gov.au/clinical-practice/guidelines-procedures/diseases-infection/immunisation/meningococcal-b

Netball
Congratulations to all Primary students who competed in the Queensland Netball Primary Schools Cup which was held in Mudgeeraba on the first weekend of the school holidays.
Thankyou Mrs Kayelene O’Dea and Mrs Melissa Skuse for taking the two primary teams to the carnival. It was a great opportunity and lots of fun for the students.

Futsal
In Week 2 of the School Holidays we had 4 lucky and very talented students (Coen Taylor, Sasha Kendall, Oliver Tuvukica and Lyndon Morello) contest the National Schools Futsal Titles at Nissan Arena in Brisbane.
Coen represented South West QLD. Coen being an experienced campaigner has contested the National schools tournament for his region multiple times. In the Ppen Boys division the competition was physical to say the least. In a tough and very competitive tournament Coen’s team finished with a commendable 6th place finish.
Lyndon represented South West Queensland. Their team did exceptionally well, going undefeated for the entire tournament until the semi-final rounds, where they unfortunately were eliminated just shy of a Gold Medal game. At the conclusion of the tournament Lyndon was offered a spot in the u/12 Australian team to travel to Fiji next year. Very exciting times for Lyndon.
Oliver also represented South West Queensland in the Under 8's division. His team placed 2nd at the end of the rounds however unfortunately were eliminated in the semi-finals. A great achievment Oliver - well done !
Finally, in a twist of events with the Queensland squads scheduling Sasha Kendall represented the Victorian team for the week. Sasha’s team had some great wins (ironically with two against QLD teams) and she even took to court as captain of Victoria towards the end of the week such was the confidence her new found teammates had in her. Well done Sasha.
All four students had a fantastic experience being able to play at a National tournament and are excited about future representative opportunities.
