Year 2 students started their year with a Maths challenge.  Mrs O’Dea brought in her class photo from when she was in Year 2 and asked the students to do 3 things:

1. Find Mrs O’Dea in the photo;
2. Work out how old Mrs O’Dea is now, based on the fact she was in Year 2 in 1984;
3. Work out the age difference between themselves and Mrs O’Dea.

The students worked collaboratively in small learning teams throughout this challenge.  They had to discuss with their group which methods they would use.  Students used strategies such as counting on, tally marks, addition, subtraction, guess and check,  prior knowledge,  counting numbers between given ages teamed with hundreds boards, mini whiteboards, chalk diagrams on the bricks and counters to come up with their reasonably accurate answers.
