A key to ensuring we are successful learners is being able to retain our learning across short and long term periods of time. This allows us the opportunity to take the next steps with our learning and to build on our assumed knowledge.

Both the Year 6 and 7 Mathematics classes began their semester by trying to remember all the topics covered this year. Sounds like a simple activity, right? Both classes found that it was a challenging activity from initially recalling the topics and then filling in details, topic specific vocabulary, relevant symbols, adding diagrams, labelling key aspects, providing worked examples and ensuring that there were no fake facts amongst these recall posters.

In Maths, as within most learning areas, having a firm foundation of prior learning certainly makes success in the future a more likely occurrence. It was also pretty amazing to have a visual representation of just how hard we worked in Semester 1 and an active way to remind ourselves of some transferable skills of learning including collaborating with peers, encouraging our brains to consider topics more thoroughly and deeply and using resources to clarify and enhance our knowledge.
