BUSH TUCKER TALKS
Friday 11th October, students from Prep to Year 5 were lucky enough to attend “Bush Tucker Talks” hosted by David, Brenda and Sharman Parsons who told us all about the Bush Tucker plants in our school garden and local Granite belt area.
We learnt that some plants were used by First Nations People for nutritious food, others used for medicine and some used to make baskets, roofing, spears, axes and fish traps to name a few. Sharman also performed a song/dance about the healing nature of plants that she wrote. She shared knowledge about her headpiece and white paint that she wore during the performance that was from her dessert people tribe in the Central desert of Australia. Sharman also told us that she had a special connection to Stanthorpe as she had Uncles from here.
It was a very special experience and the students got to taste, touch and smell many of the plants. It was a great reminder for us to be mindful of the plants around us and the many benefits they have for us and animals in our area, we are all connected and we should nurture and take care of them as we rely on them for survival.
A special thank you to our guest speakers, teachers and to Mrs Jane Muller for their help with the workshops throughout the day.
Mrs Wilshire
