The Teenage Brain
“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.” ― Socrates
For as long as there have been teenagers there have been adults trying to understand them. While Socrates might have been overcritical of teens, he didn’t have access to the knowledge and science that we have now, that helps to explain what is happening in a teenage brain.
Having a good understanding of the neurological and cognitive changes that are going on for your teenager is the key to building a better relationship with them. To help parents with this, Dr Justin Coulson hosting a webinar on July 18 at 8pm. If you can’t make the webinar, there is some good reading on his page at The Teenage Brain | Happy Families
I highly recommend that all parents and carers of teenagers learn about how the brain develops as it can reduce the amount of conflict in the home, and improve the quality of our relationships with teens.
