Principal’s News

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The fete is our focus this week, with the final touches taking place as I write. We are hoping for good weather and great day for our school community. We have received great support from many of our families, and I want to offer my thanks to all of you for your tireless dedication to this event – our major fundraiser.

Our annual Awards Night was another showcase of student excellence throughout the year of 2016. It was a great evening, which was well-supported by our families. This was my final Awards Night, and, as expressed in my address, it has been a privilege to be the Principal of this school. We have achieved much together, and the future is well-assured and ready for the next chapter of its story. I have had some contact with the new Principal, Mr Phillip McGreevy, and he is enthused about the great gift this school will be to him and his leadership.

I want to acknowledge Mrs Linda Perrett and Angie Sims for all their hard work in preparing the evening. It ran smoothly, as is usually the case, which speaks to the skill and organization of these two staff members.

Last week, our Red Lion Cup girls’ soccer squad won the tournament with a 7-0 victory over St Joseph’s College, Toowoomba in the final. Congratulations to the girls whose talent is clear and further highlighted by the stats: they did not have single goal scored against them for the entire competition. See the article below.

Finally, I will be on leave until 17 November with Mrs Linda Perrett acting as Principal for this time.

Maths Team Challenge

On Wednesday afternoon 12 intrepid year four and five students travelled to Warwick to compete in the annual Warwick State High Maths team challenge. The event is aimed to challenge the students to solve problems in a pressure situation and to enjoy the challenge that this provides. Although no team won on the day it was a great experience for our students Dustin Alldridge, Sam Ellis, Claire Williamson, Eliza Telfer, Eloise Knight, Taylah Organ, Taryn McCosker, Ava O’Reilly, Hannah Widderick, Billy Webb, Bindi McIntyre and Salvatore Coco. Thank you to parents who assisted with transport on the day.

Swimming

All year three to six classes have commenced swimming lesson in preparation for the upcoming annual swimming carnival and our younger students commence next week. Parents are reminded that swimming is an important part of the school’s curriculum. The swimming carnival will be held in week 7 on Wednesday the 16th of November. Our younger students – 5 to 8 years- will swim first with the full carnival occurring from approximately 10 am.

Year 1 B

1B students have been exploring how spaces are used for different purposes. We discussed how we use the different spaces in our classroom. For example, the back of the room is for art because it has lino floor in case paint is spilt; and the large carpet area is needed for lessons on the carpet and space to use the Interactive Whiteboard. Students then redesigned the desk layout to see what different spaces they could create and then we discussed positives, negatives and interesting impacts of each design. Finally, students worked in teams to write a short persuasive text to convince Miss Benson their chosen desk design is the best use of our classroom space

Year 8 News

This term the year 8’s are studying probability in mathematics and consequently will be hosting the year 5 and 6’s for a Carnival of chance. At this carnival, students have been challenged to design and build a financially viable fair game. They will be collecting the year 5 and 6’s game scores to then help them make suggestions on how to improve the attraction and profit of their game. There are some spectacular games being conceptualised and starting to take shape. It promises to be an enjoyable day for all.

Loud Shirt Day

Last Friday Primary students adorned themselves it their brightest colours in aid of Hear and Say. Students wore prints and patterns of every kind in exchange for a gold coin donation that will be donated to Hear and Say, a not-for-profit leading paediatric auditory-verbal and implantable technology (including cochlear implants) teaching children who are deaf or hearing impaired to listen and speak since 1992.

St Joseph’s Win Darling Downs Red Lion Plate

After a strong performance in the Semi-Final against St Ursula’s, St Joseph’s Stanthorpe took on the much larger St Joseph’s College Toowoomba in the final of the Red Lion Plate. Playing in Toowoomba the match began evenly with both teams tightly pressuring in attack and defence.

Captain Lilly Manahan lead from the front as she and Caitlin Debnam Thwarted several opposition raids turning strong defence into great counter attack, allowing Anika Spiller to find the back of the net in the sixth minute. This lifted the whole team to produce inspiring teamwork and support play to place Anika Spiller in the position to score 3 more goals before half time giving the St Joseph’s Girls a comfortable 4-0 lead going into half time.

The second half saw the Toowoomba team come out fighting and keeper Katie Yates was forced to field a number of powerful long range shots before Anika Spiller and Ally McLellan combined skilfully in attack to see Ally score 10 minutes into the second half. Captain Lilly Manahan then joined the scoring list with a powerful curve ball from the 30m line to take the score to 6-0. Spiller showed great resilience after being taken down in the goal box resulting in the conversion of a penalty bringing the score line to 7-0.

At the competition of the match Team Officials were required to select a player of the match. This was awarded to Anika Spiller who showed great individual and team play throughout the match. St Joseph’s School Stanthorpe students Matthew McDonald, Liam Hitchener and Hunter Murphy officiated the game. Both teams at the end of the match agreed that the match was refereed with confidence, conviction and consistency. The level at which this game was refereed made for a well flowing game free of controversy.

In what was a great team effort from all players the St Joseph’s Stanthorpe team highlighted how enjoyable the game of soccer can be to both play and watch.

SAMSUNG CUP

Last weekend the following girls attended a netball carnival in Ipswich:

Kirra Daddow, Isabelle Kay, Kiarra Smith, Eliza Telfer and Hannah Widderick along with 4 girls from Ballandean State School.

Results for Saturday

The Kuluin School - lost 10-7
Unity College - won 15-1
Mary Mackillop College (Maroon) - won 16-2
Tara Shire State College - won 25-0
Holland Park State School (Yellow) - lost 7-6

Placed into division 3 (of 6) based on Saturday's results.

Sunday's Results

Mary Mackillop Catholic College (Blue) - lost 16-7
Buranda State School -lost 12-6
West Moreton Anglican School - lost 2-1
St Joseph's Primary School - lost 6-1

We (Karen, Jodie and I) were very impressed with how the girls played all weekend, their sportsmanship and attitude and how well they came together as a team. I think the girls all enjoyed all aspects of the weekend and we could see definite improvement in how they played as the weekend progressed. Overall a very worthwhile experience and a well-run carnival which I think we should look at participating in each year.
