Thursday 3 March saw the sporting calendar get underway with the running of the annual School Swimming Carnival. The rolling thunder and lightning show in the early hours of the morning had us all a little anxious, but we were greeted with a sun shining morning to begin the day.
Participation rates were high from both houses across all competitive races and novelty events alike, which made separating the teams on points a mighty task.
The inaugural running of the House Mentor Raft Race was one of the highlights of the day, with Davadi coming out eventual winners. A heroic effort from Ms Cullinan in trying to derail Davadi’s chances with an attempted capsize however it wasn’t enough to get McAuley over the line.
In the closest carnival seen in recent times, McAuley were awarded the Spirit Trophy in a tight contest and after 1000 points combined were awarded to both houses across a day of competition, Davadi were named overall House Champion by a meagre 14 points.
I’d like to personally congratulate all students and House Captains in particular for their efforts in making the day a success, the teaching staff for allowing the day to run so smoothly and finally to Gail and Michael Smail at the Stanthorpe Swimming Pool for providing a first-class facility for our school.

Orienteering
Tuesday 15th March saw a number of St Joseph's students compete at the Darling Downs Regional Orienteering trials at Leyburn.
Congratulations to Jordan Cosmo, Eden Shatte, Aryanna Davie, Margaret O’Dea, Addison McCosker, Damon Pompetti and Oliver Lahey who have all successfully secured a spot in the Darling Downs Regional Orienteering Team to compete in the State Championships later this year. A special mention must go to Erin O'Dea, who despite losing a fight with a branch and having to have stitches, still managed a great time securing her spot on the team also.
Students from St Joseph’s make up almost 20% (18.2% actually) of the Darling Downs team.
HPE Week
HPE Week is a week that celebrates the role of Health & Physical Education in schools and communities. The aim is to promote the importance of HPE in the Australian Curriculum and highlight the importance of HPE to the learning and development of children and young people.
HPE Week at St Joseph's was held from 28 February to 4 March and saw students participate in their normal HPE curriculum as well as a range of lunchtime activities to encourage the fun and enjoyment of physical activity.
Netball
Congratulations to our St Joseph's Secondary girls who competed in the Laura Geitz Netball Carnival in Toowoomba on Sunday 13th March.
The girls came second in their pool and came fourth overall out of 18 teams. An awesome effort!
Thanks to Mrs Petrie for coaching and Mrs Ellis for managing the team.
Squash
Anika Rossington recently competed at the Regional Darling Downs 10-19yrs Squash trials on Tuesday 8th March in Toowoomba.
She was undefeated on the day and received the highest ranking in her age group. Her outstanding achievements on the day have secured her a spot in the Darling Downs team to compete in the State Championships to be held in Cairns from 26-29 May 2022.
Congratulations Anika !
