My thanks to the staff and students for their good work throughout the Term, and to all families for their support of the school. I am also grateful for the work of the P&F Association and the support and advice of the School Advisory Council. The quality of learning and positive learning environment is important to us all.
I would also like to extend a special thanks to Spano’s IGA Stanthorpe who very kindly donated $1000 to the School for our weekly Breakfast Club. Store manager, Andrew Orford, presented the donation on Wednesday. Breakfast Club is available for our students between 8:00am and 8:30am Tuesdays on to Secondary campus and Wednesdays on the Primary campus.
Have a Great Easter
To all students, staff and families I wish you a blessed, safe and restful Easter break. Please come back rested and ready for a great Term 2.
God Bless

NAPLAN went well as students in Year 3,5,7 and 9 actively engaged in the four tests that formed part of the annual national testing. I congratulate all the students for putting their best foot forward, and I thank the staff, particularly Hayley Pfeiffer, for running a seamless test period.
As we draw close to yet another Term here at St Joseph’s I thank the students, families and staff for their resilience and perseverance. As always, the students have engaged well in their learning and most should be proud of their results and achievements across Term 1. Interim reports will be sent out to parents via the Parent Portal towards the end of Week 10 Term 1.
Secondary Parent Teacher Consultations will be scheduled for early next term. This will allow time for interim reports to be sent home to families. Further information in relation to booking times for consultations with teachers will be sent out early in Term 2. In the interim, if you have any questions relating to the progress of your child in any area of their learning, please do not hesitate to contact us or any of the teaching staff to discuss.
Have a safe and happy Easter.

The newsletter brings Term 1 to a close. If the calendar didn't alert us to this, then the evident tiredness of the students and staff would indicate that a holiday is needed. It has been a busy term for all, and one from which I hope all can find something of which they can be proud. However big or small the achievements, they deserve to be recognised and celebrated. I have seen some wonderful examples of resilience and persistence across the campus in the last ten weeks, from children who now believe in themselves as learners. I could also recount many examples of service, courage, putting others first and seeing the good in their peers.
In the last two weeks, the following have occurred:
- Students across the campus have participated in House activities which were a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the spirit in our P-12 community.
- Year 6 students have been involved in discussions about how leadership may be enacted in Term 2.
- Two information sessions were held for parents wanting to know more information about how we teach reading.
- We have welcomed two children from Japan whose father is on a placement at Stanthorpe Hospital for two weeks.
- Parent Teacher Consultations have been held.
There is much to look forward to in Term 2, including the Border District Eisteddfod in May where we are delighted to have our choirs performing again. Prior to that we have our Arts Festival day which will feature the choirs along with musical theatre. Sport will also play a part in the calendar, as it always does. In terms of learning, the students from P - 6 will be consolidating and extending their work from Term 1.
I would like to acknowledge the work of all the teachers and the school officers this term in helping each student to be the best version of themselves that they can be. They have worked tirelessly for the children on the Primary Campus because they care so much about each and every one of them. We are very lucky to have them as part of our community and I thank them for all they do.
On behalf of everyone on the Primary Campus, I would like to wish all our families a holy, happy and safe holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone again on 23 April. Parents are reminded that this will be a shortened week for students given the Easter and ANZAC public holidays.
With God's blessings

ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MISSION & IDENTITY
It’s been a privilege to witness our continued commitment to the Mercy Values that define our school. The term was filled with significant moments: the historic celebration of our 150-Year Mass and Dinner, and opening of the History Room, the dedication of our Student Leaders at the Leader Induction, the solemnity of Ash Wednesday, St Joseph’s Day, and our Way of the Cross liturgy this week.
As we now enter the sacred season of Easter, let’s carry the spirit of these celebrations with us, remembering the hope, renewal and love that Easter brings.
I hope you have time over the Easter break for rest and reflection with loved ones. Here are a few suggestions for Easter holiday activities:
For our Primary students:
- Easter Garden Creation: Help your child create a small Easter garden using a shallow dish, soil, and small plants. You can add a cross made of twigs and small figures to represent the Easter story.
- Easter Story Egg Hunt: Hide plastic eggs with simple picture clues inside, each leading to the next part of the Easter story. After they find all the eggs, read the story together.
For our Secondary students:
- Volunteer your time: Offer your time to help others in need – mow a lawn, cook a meal, write a thank you note.
- Holy Week: Attend the Holy Thursday or Good Friday mass, or 2nd Rite of Reconciliation (10th April).
For everyone:
- Easter Sunday brunch: Prepare a special Easter brunch together to share.
I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter break and look forward to seeing you in Term 2.
With God's blessings,Mary Roberts

Cybersafety
Young people today are growing up in an increasingly connected world where technology is part of their everyday lives –– for learning, socialising, and entertainment. While the digital world offers enormous benefits, it also comes with serious risks. From cyberbullying and online predators to inappropriate content and screen time concerns, navigating the online environment can be challenging for young people and their families.
Cybersafety is not just about blocking access –– it's about empowering young people with the knowledge and skills they need to use technology responsibly and safely. This includes understanding privacy settings, recognising scams, and developing healthy digital habits. At the same time, it's important for parents and caregivers to stay informed, have open and judgement-free conversations with their children, and lead by example through positive online behaviour.
In today's digital age, safeguarding a child's wellbeing must also include protecting their online life. This edition of SchoolTV will help you better understand the digital landscape your child is navigating and offer practical strategies to help them stay safe, confident and in control online.

UNITING EFFORTS FOR PROJECT COMPASSION
The Secondary Mentor Classes have demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and commitment toward Project Compassion, uniting their efforts to support this meaningful initiative.
Over the past weeks, various sales have been organised, including a "Bake Sale," a "Caritas Raffle," a "Hot Chocolate Sale," and an Ice Cream Sale.
These events have created a vibrant atmosphere, encouraging generosity, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose among students as they work together for a great cause.

Our students have been busy cooking up a storm, putting their culinary skills to great use in preparing Mercy Meals. These thoughtfully crafted meals are distributed to families in need, providing not only nourishment but also a comforting gesture of support and care during challenging times.
The preparation of Mercy Meals is a beautiful example of the values our school community holds dear—compassion, generosity, and a commitment to making a positive impact. It’s an opportunity for students to actively engage in service, understanding the importance of empathy and extending help to those who may be facing hardship.
Through this initiative, students learn the power of small acts of kindness and their ability to bring hope to others. The Mercy Meals project is more than just cooking; it’s about coming together, creating connections, and fostering a spirit of unity and love within our community. We are proud of our students’ dedication to this meaningful endeavor!

CONGRATULATIONS TO GRACE ROBERTS
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Grace Roberts for her incredible performance at the Q1 District Final of the Lions Youth of the Year Program, held in Brisbane on Saturday 22nd March.
Competing against four exceptionally talented students from South East Queensland and Northern NSW, Grace showcased her remarkable skills and dedication. While she will not move on to the Queensland Final, Grace's outstanding effort has been a true credit to our school and the Lions Club of Stanthorpe.
We are incredibly proud of her achievements in this prestigious and challenging competition!
EXPLORING SCIENCE : YEAR 9 STUDENTS DIVE INTO ANATOMY
This term, Year 9 students had the chance to delve into the complexities of Biology through a hands-on rat dissection activity. Guided by their teachers, the students explored anatomical structures and organ systems, deepening their understanding of the incredible workings of living organisms.
The session emphasised respect for the specimen and the scientific process, encouraging students to approach the task with curiosity and professionalism.
Though challenging for some, the dissection proved to be an educational and memorable step in their science studies, fostering teamwork, discovery, and a greater appreciation for the intricacies of life.

Year 11 students had an exciting day at UniSQ on Wednesday 2nd April, immersing themselves in the vibrant university experience.
Despite the rain, their enthusiasm remained undeterred as they engaged in a variety of sessions, including Engineering, Health and Medical Science, Law and Criminology, Nursing, Education, Archaeology, and more!

CELEBRATING PREPS FIRST TERM SUCCESS
This term has flown by, so let's take a moment to reflect on the incredible progress made by all our Preps in learning and self-confidence during their first 10 weeks of school.
They've embraced handwriting, crafted sentences, expanded their vocabulary, and enjoyed discovering new texts like What's In My Lunchbox?
In Mathematics, the focus has been on counting, basic addition and subtraction, and numeral formation, while Religion classes have explored Lent, the Holy Family, and Mercy Values like Respect and Compassion. These lessons resonate beautifully at school and home.
Creative pursuits have added joy to their journey—whether practicing for the Eisteddfod or singing in the classroom. A heartfelt thank-you to families for fostering learning at home; your encouragement, especially with reading and ‘tricky words,’ is invaluable.
Let’s celebrate our Preps' achievements as we approach the term's conclusion!

MAKING A SPLASH FOR A GREAT CAUSE
Throughout March, a group of exceptional students embraced the challenge of participating in Laps for Life, a nationwide swimming initiative dedicated to supporting youth mental health services. By taking the plunge into this worthy cause, they not only demonstrated their impressive swimming abilities but also made a profound impact by raising awareness and funds to ensure young Australians have access to essential mental health resources.
Driven by dedication and teamwork, our students set inspiring personal goals—some striving for record-breaking lap counts, while others aimed for personal bests. Their efforts showcased more than just physical endurance; they highlighted the power of community spirit in creating meaningful change.
We are delighted to announce that their combined efforts raised an incredible $2,409! Every dollar raised will go directly toward programs that provide vital mental health support for young people across the country.
This remarkable initiative was organized by Secondary teacher, Ms Georgia Brown, whose dedication and leadership were key to its success. A heartfelt thank you to Ms Brown for uniting our students and making this opportunity possible.
The students who participated in this initiative were: Amity Buscher, Milton Lemon, Emma Pradella, Jessica Pradella, Jordan Pradella, Chloe Schnitzerling, Billy Skuse, Alexander Stefanon, Camilla Watts, Dakota Burton and Eliza Bonner.
We are immensely proud of their commitment, enthusiasm, and collective spirit. We would also like to thank everyone who supported their fundraising efforts.

Congratulations to our Year 7 debating team for their outstanding achievement in their very first debate!
On 27 March, they faced Mary McKillop Catholic College, Highfields, and showcased exceptional skill and teamwork, securing a well-deserved victory.
What a fantastic effort—well done!

Each week, participating students will have one-on-one reading sessions with Nessie, a delightful West Highland Terrier, and her owner Helen (pictured on the left in the photo below). Extensive research highlights the benefits of children reading to dogs, as it fosters a positive and supportive environment for reading development. Both Nessie and Helen have undergone specialised training to prepare for this role, and Helen will also bring her expertise as a teacher to these sessions.
This wonderful program will commence in Week 1 of Term 2 and continue throughout the year. St Joseph's School is proud to be the only school in the region currently implementing this initiative, making it an exciting milestone for our community. We hope that over time, more dogs and their owners will be trained for this vital program so that even more students can benefit from this unique approach to learning.
If you’d like to learn more about the program, please reach out to the school. We’d be happy to connect you with Janine, the founder of Story Dogs in Australia, who is based here in Stanthorpe.
