The past two weeks have been a busy time at St Joseph’s School. The Stanthorpe Show, Secondary Swimming Carnival, Foundation Day Mass, Student Leader Induction, Pancake Tuesday and Ash Wednesday are highlights.
Congratulations to all our students who had successful entries in the Stanthorpe Show, in particular, the Agricultural Science students who won the fruit wall display. Special thanks to the P&F Association for their fundraising efforts at the Can Bar.
My appreciation to all the staff and students for the organisation and successful conduct of our start of year Foundation Day Mass and the Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Both are important religious and community events on our calendar. Thanks to Father Gonzo for leading both services.
Our Year 12s were inducted on Foundation Day and we look forward to their leadership this year. School Captains Annaliese McCosker and Brigid O'Dea are leading an enthusiastic group who aim to support all students across the school.
Over the break the Nature Play P-2 Project was completed. The work of the P&F team lead by Amelia Wilshire has been outstanding. The students love the space and enjoy their play time every day. We will officially open and bless the space on Friday this week. A detailed thank you, listing the many contributors and displaying some photos, is in an article later in this newsletter.
We are heading into the middle of the term. It is important that students are fully focused on their learning, keeping up with their assessment and homework and supporting each other’s learning. Similarly, parents and carers are encouraged to regularly engage in their children’s learning.
God Bless
It has been indeed a busy start to the year across the school. The term has quickly progressed, with many students and teachers busily preparing for the upcoming drafting and assessment phase in most subjects. Across the Secondary campus, I have been impressed to see the engagement in the learning environments and the focus on success in their learning from students.
Year 7 camp is fast approaching in Week 6 this Term. It should be a great opportunity for students to connect and build positive relationships outside of the confines of the classroom. This will hopefully build on the work done across the Year 7 transition to secondary program this year. The Year 7's have been working closely with Ms Anna Jones over the first 4 weeks in morning mentor, and this week, have begun making connections with their Year 10 buddies who will look after them once they commence in mentor groups in Week 5.
A reminder that NAPLAN preparations will be underway shortly for all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9. Information relating to practice sessions and the NAPLAN test schedule will be sent out to families shortly.
In Week 3 and 4, Mrs Butson and I facilitated the completion of the QCAA Academic Integrity course with the Year 11 and 12 students. This course aims to build student understanding of their responsibilities in creating authentic assessment responses. This plays an important role in ensuring our senior students can be successful in the senior schooling context.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL PRIMARY & TEACHING & LEARNING
Welcome to the second school newsletter of the Term. It is always a pleasure each fortnight to reflect on the activities of the previous two weeks and to consider all the opportunities which we offer our learners to grow as individuals and as learners.
This week, we welcomed Jacob Templeton to school to talk to the Year 3 - 6 students about his life as an Australian Paralympian. His words were inspirational and his advice about working hard to achieve goals struck a chord with many of our students.
Swimming lessons have started for all students across Year 1 - 6, chess club has met each Wednesday and on a Friday lunchtime, Olivia Page and Grace Roberts (two of our Year 12 students) have commenced a drama club for interested students.
This week we have celebrated Shrove Tuesday and also recognised Ash Wednesday by participating in a P - 12 liturgy. Another significant school event held last week was the mass for Foundation Day. Our school is steeped in rich history and it is important that we understand where we came from as well as have a clear path for the future.
In a few weeks time, we will be offering parents and carers the opportunity to meet with the teachers to discuss how each child has settled into school. These are an important way of establishing and then maintaining relationships with the teachers and I do encourage to make an appointment if you are able to do so. These relationships are a key contributor to the success and happiness of your child at school.
As you would expect by Week 4, learning is gathering pace on the Primary Campus and this includes developing an understanding of what it means to be an effective learner as well as the subject-specific content and skills. Please continue to ask your children what they learned in school that day as opposed to asking how their day was. The former request is likely to elicit a more positive and detailed response and this also helps the children to make connections between their thoughts.
Finally, I encourage you to access the Primary Campus newsletter, the latest edition of which was sent on Monday of Week 4. A link was sent via EdSmart.
With God's blessings

Our Lenten Journey Begins
Wednesday marked the beginning of our Lenten journey as we gathered together for our Ash Wednesday prayer liturgy. Coming together and receiving the ashes, gave us all an opportunity to consider ways in which we may approach the weeks ahead as we journey towards Easter.
The Challenge
Classes will be tasked with daily challenges for the Lenten journey, offering a time to reflect, challenge, and commit to growth and change in the weeks ahead. For middle, upper Primary and Secondary classes, the challenge will be in the form of Lentopoly, making their way around the board to meet the set tasks before Easter. In lower primary, students will be colouring in activities once they have been completed, with the final product being a giant coloured egg.
Journeying as Community
While we practise prayer, fasting and giving to others as individuals, Lent is a time of community, and so we encourage each other on the journey, preparing to celebrate the joy and significance of the risen Christ.
With God's blessings,
Megan Mahoney

FOUNDATION DAY MASS & STUDENT LEADER INDUCTION
Friday 9th February saw the students of St Joseph's come together to celebrate St Joseph's School Foundation Day which incorporates the Beginning of Year Mass and the Student Leader Inductions. The celebration of the Eucharist is an integral component of the Catholic tradition and enables us to foster our sense of who we are as part of the Catholic Church.
It was wonderful to gather and celebrate with the students, especially the Year 12 students who received their Leadership badges upon completion of the Mass.
Congratulations and we wish them all the best for 2024.
ST JOSEPH'S WILL CELEBRATE 150 YEARS in 2025 - CAN YOU HELP ?
St Joseph's School, Stanthorpe will celebrate its' 150th year anniversary on 9 February 2025.
A committee (the "150 Committee") is being formed to discuss, plan and organise several events to mark this special milestone. To ensure the success of these events, we are seeking assistance and support from past students, staff, families and friends of St Joseph's School.
If you are interested in joining the committee, please email Angie Sims, Angelina.Sims@twb.catholic.edu.au by the end of February.
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia's main annual fundraising campaign. Spanning across the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.
DEVELOPING CONFIDENT & SUCCESSFUL READERS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL
This year, the way that reading is taught across all schools in the Toowoomba Diocese is changing. This is due to a number of factors (including a revision nationally of the English curriculum) and is reflective of a growing body of research across the world which recognises the effectiveness of learning to read through a phonics approach. As a school, we are investing heavily in texts that encourage learners from P - Yr 2 to decode words using the specific sound alphabetic code they have learned. In this way, children will not be guessing words or using other cueing systems to determine unfamiliar vocabulary, which is considered to be a less effective way of developing reading automaticity.
Parents will notice a difference in the texts that are sent home as readers. Those texts that were used in previous years will now be books that we would like parents to read and discuss with their children. They will be marked with ‘Please read to me’. The decodable readers should be read by the children. Of course, these are not the only texts that children should have access to. At school and at home, it is important that they are engaging every day with high quality literature that contains more complex vocabulary and sentence structures. In this way, they hear what good reading sounds like as well as discuss aspects of the texts such as vocabulary which will support their ongoing reading development.
Alongside this development, as a school we are also modifying the way we teach spelling to include a more phonics approach. This is again in response to research and also the revisions of the Australian Curriculum: English. The approach we will be using is based on word studies around a structured progression of sounds. Weekly spelling lists to learn at home before a test on Friday will be no more as the learning of words out of context does little to improve spelling generally. Monitoring of learning will take a variety of forms and will be part of the teaching and learning process.
The main changes are relevant to those students in P - 2 at this stage, but some changes, including those related to spelling, will also be seen in Yr 3 - 6 over time.
More details will be shared with parents as we progress through this term. We will also hold an information session in the future.
INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR - PREPARATIONS ARE WELL UNDERWAY !
With less than two months until the International Study Tour, preparations are well underway.
As part of their exciting schedule in London and Paris, the six staff and thirty-five students will also be visiting Flanders, Ypres, Passchendaele, Amiens, Fromelles and the Somme. The group will be involved in the French-Australian Bridge of Friendship Opening Ceremony and as part of the formality, will be singing the French National Anthem. The group have been busy learning and rehearsing the Anthem twice a week and we thank Dr James Cuskelly for his guidance and assistance in ensuring it’s a perfected rendition.
We sincerely wish to thank Mrs Joyce Pozzebon (Grandmother of Patrick Moxham in Year 5), who has made two wreaths for the group to lay at Menin Gate and the ANZAC Day Service at Villers Bretonneux. The wreaths are light-weight but most effective portraying our school colours and school crest.
SUCCESS AT THE STANTHORPE SHOW
Hats off to Mr Allan Lahey and our exceptional Agricultural Science team for clinching victory in the Fruit Wall competition during the latest Stanthorpe Show.
A round of applause is also due for the numerous students showcasing their talents in various competitions, spanning from Vegie Creature creation to Lego building and horse riding. Witnessing the impressive achievements of our students is always a delight.
Thanks to Mrs Mary Roberts, who along with Tyron Fraser (Dalby), Joel Speranza (TCS) and Marty Hollis (St Mary's Toowoomba), facilitated the Hybrid Learning Day at the Micah centre in Toowoomba.
This day brought together students studying Modern History, Legal, Specialist Maths and Aerospace in Years 11&12 from St Jospeh's Stanthorpe, OLSCC Dalby, St Saviour's, St Mary's and St Joseph's Toowoomba.
This richness of dialogue and learning was evident, and the students will hopefully move forward with confidence having built and reinforced connections with the students operating in the hybris space.
Grace Roberts has been selling raffle tickets as part of her 2024 Premier’s Anzac Prize.
We thank the Stanthorpe RSL Club and Gleesons Mercery for their support in donating prizes for the raffle.
The raffle will be drawn 7th March, so grab some tickets for a great cause.

P & F HOST BACK TO SCHOOL & WELCOME BBQ
Friday 9th February saw many families attend the annual Parents & Friends Welcome BBQ, held on the Primary Campus.
It was a wonderful opportunity for many families to celebrate the start of the school year and a great way to meet and welcome new families to the school.
SAVE THE DATE - SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR IS COMING TO OUR SCHOOL
Thursday 1 February saw the sporting calendar get underway with the running of the annual school swimming carnival under the skies of a beautiful Granite Belt day.
Participation rates were high from both houses across all competitive races and novelty events alike, which made separating the teams on points a mighty task. Along with the participation, the quality of swimming on display was sensational with 13 records falling.
The inaugural running of the House mentor Novelty Relay Race was one of the highlights of the day as students contended with horse riding on pool noodles, balancing on boogie boards and paddling hard in linked one arm races.
All of this action resulted in a 12 point victory for Davadi. Considering 12 points are given for first place in all age champion events, one first place score separated the intense rivalry and credit must go to all competing students for allowing such a close result. McAuley were not to be outdone with the ‘Congo Line of Fun’ earning them the spirit trophy for the day.
I’d like to personally congratulate all students and the House Captains in particular for their efforts in making the day a success, the teaching staff for allowing the day to run so smoothly and finally to the YMCA Staff for providing a first-class facility for our school.
